What you need for a NJ marriage license:

1. Proof of identity by presenting your driver's license, passport or state/federal I.D.
2. Proof of your residency.
3. Your social security card or social security number.*
4. A witness, 18 years of age or older.
5. The $28 application fee.

 
*At the time you apply for your marriage license you will have to provide the name of who is going to marry you, where, and when, and an address and phone number for the officiant.

Previous Marriages:
You will need to show documentation to prove a previous marriage has been dissolved either through death or divorce. Acceptable documents include a certified copy of the final decree of divorce or a certified copy of the death certificate for your former spouse.
Renewal of Vows:
Re-marriage licenses are available in New Jersey. There is no waiting period for a re-marriage license.
Waiting Period:
New Jersey has a three (3) day waiting period. For weekend weddings, you will need to apply the Tuesday before to satisfy the three days (72 hours) by Friday. If you have special circumstances such as emergency, illness, military leave, etc., a Superior Court Judge can sign a waiver that would waive the waiting period.

All persons who intend to get married in New York State must obtain a Marriage License

• If you apply for a marriage license in New York City, the fee is $35.
• If you apply for a marriage license anywhere else in the state of New York, the fee is $40.
• New York State requires all individuals who intend to get married to apply for and obtain a marriage license from any city or town clerk’s office.
• To Get Married in New York City you and your prospective spouse must appear in person at one of the five (5) borough offices.
• Yes, a marriage license application can be started online. However, both applicants must still appear in person, together and at the same time, at the either of the five (5) borough offices to complete the application and sign the application.
• Both parties must appear in person to apply for a marriage license.
• Photo ID and Proof of age is required.

 
 

• A 24 hour waiting period after you and your prospective spouse obtain your license is required by New York State Law.
